LET’S DISCOVER SOMETHING MORE ABOUT THE CATHEDRAL AND GENERAL FANTI !!

THE DUOMO OF CARPI

I was a General on a horse,

and I fought with all my force.

I would fight day and night,

with the same passion as an ancient knight.

To war I went, and I did it for a just cause,

to unify my nation, which under foreign domination was.

The building of Santa Maria Assunta’s Cathedral started on 1st February 1515 according to a project by Baldassarre Peruzzi, ordered by Alberto III Pio. It was inspired by Saint Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. Today it is known as the Duomo. Its distinguishing characteristic is the use of scagliola, an artistic technique that employs plaster mixed with glue and natural colour to create a marble effect.

Manfredo Fanti, who was an important general and politician elected senator by the King Vittorio Emanuele II, is buried here. In the Memorial Park (Parco delle Rimembranze) in Carpi you can find a bronze statue of him on his horse.
