DO YOU KNOW HOW CARPI WAS FOUNDED?  READ THE LEGEND OF A KING AND HIS HAWK!

SAGRA

This is the story of a king
That was hunting in spring

King Astolfo lost his hawk
And he almost had a stroke

He let out a sudden, piercing scream
When it was found on a tree, a hornbeam

As he had promised before
to celebrate the rejoining with his hawk
which he fortunatlly had caught
He built the city that you adore.

The legend:

One day, the Lombard King Astolfo was hunting when he lost his hawk.
He was so desperate! They were such good friends that he vowed to found a new
town wherever his hawk turned up. He found his hawk on a particular tree known as
a carpine (hornbeam) tree, so it was there that he built the Sagra Church and named
the new town Carpi after the tree.
The Sagra Church is the oldest church in Carpi in the Romanesque style. It was
established during the second half of the 8

th century and consecrated by Pope Lucius
III in 1184. Inside it can be found the marble altar piece and the sarcophagus of
Carpi’s first lord, Manfredo Pio.

PIAZZALE RE ASTOLFO

Piazzale Re Astolfo was the old center of the medieval town. Today you can see
many historical buildings there, including the Arturo Loria Library.
